Tower of Babel

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

I just watched Babel online...was going to finish anyway..thought I could write something about it.

I never thought myself of an art guy my myself, but after watching Babel, it dawned on me. It was an art film and I really like the emotional power in it.

Babel refers to the Biblical...wait let me quote this from Wikipedia...they have the best stuff...well almost...anyway here it is..

"According to Genesis 11:1-9, mankind, after the deluge, traveled from the mountain where the ark had rested, and settled in 'a plain in the land of Shinar' (or Senaar). Here, they attempted to build a city and a tower whose top might reach unto Heaven, the Tower of Babel.

The attempt to build the Tower of Babel had angered God and God made each person involved speak a different language which ultimately halted the project and scattered and disconnected the people across the planet."

And this films brilliantly shows it...it starts from two brothers living in Morocco, testing a shotgun that their father had bought for them, and they accidentally injured a tourist on a bus, who was acted by Cate Blanchett and her co-star on-screen husband...setting a chain of events throughout the globe, it was only Morocco, Mexico, USA and Japan, which eventually turned their lives upside down.

What I like about this film is its story and plot...Miscommunication, negligence, ignorance...caused the pain and suffering of such diverse characters. But makes the film stands out is the Japanese mute-deaf 16 years-old girl.

Though some of her scenes are disturbing(nude scenes...), but you can really feel for the girl...how much she wanted to be accepted by the society, how much she want to be like any normal Japanese girl. But because of her disability, she couldn't experience it.

This piece of art tells us how important communication is and we must learn to be empathetic and not ignore and neglect the people around us as we are connected to one another...One move, we can set the whole world in a constant motion, either good or bad. But what matters the most, is we choose the right path and not the wrong one...

Just want to make a point with this amazing art film I've watched. =)
